Benelux GAA - Gaelic Football Round 1

Updated: Apr 3

Secretary of the Benelux, Ciaran Martin, has the inside scoop—read all about it below.

On the 23rd of March, Benelux GAA kicked off its first Football Championship round of 2024.

This event was excellently hosted by Amsterdam GAC, one of the powerhouses in Benelux football.

Spanning over four pitches and with over 300 people in attendance across both the Men's and Ladies' football, the day began at 10:30 am with everyone raring to go.

On offer for these clubs was the Cup, Shield, and Plate in the men's competition. In the ladies' competition, the Cup and the Shield were up for grabs.

MEN'S: After hard-fought battles between all the teams, the day came to a close with Eindhoven edging out Frankfurt for the Cup, Leuven brilliantly taking home the Shield in an exciting game against Luxembourg, and Nijmegen GFC scraping a hard-fought win for the Plate against Düsseldorf in the men's competition.

LADIES': The Belgium Ladies took home the Cup against Luxembourg, two teams that were strongholds in the competition throughout the day, while Den Haag Ladies edged out Nijmegen for the Shield in an excitingly close game..

A special shoutout to both Darren Tierney (Eindhoven) and Emma Healy (Luxembourg), whose individual performances earned them MVPs on the day.

Another shoutout goes to Groningen Gaels, who made a comeback to the Benelux after a long hiatus, the only club in the region that is populated entirely by students.

Shoutout to the Earls of Leuven who, for the first time in their 8-year history, had the largest squad of all clubs in the Benelux.

Needless to say, this was a very exciting and successful day with great football played, and teams are already gearing up for the 2nd round. Eindhoven will host the men's competition and Belgium will host the ladies' competition on April 20th

Ciaran Martin,

Benelux Secretary
